Food glorious food!
In Bali you can never go to a big town without trying some delicous food.
But, sometimes the food might not be indonesian.
For example, if you go to the nearest resteraut to here (Betelnt cafe) the menu is just western food, and evevn if you go to a resteraunt that does sell indonesian food it will only have these three dishes.
- Nasi goreng - fried rice
- Mie goreng - fried noodles
- Gado-Gado - Veges, peanuts and tempeh
There is one good thing though, at any market or warung (dairy) you can get fresh fruit and vegetibles so you can make your own food and the food at the warung are quite traditional with things like all of these.
And that's what i've learned in my first 648 hours in Bali.
P.s. and then there are the yellow watermelons

Hawkers & Touts
in my first 552 hours in Bali I have noticed the amount of Hawkers and touts. The come up to you and ask you if you would like to buy something, if you say "Tidak" (No in indonesan) they stay beside you until you are pressured into buying some thing. So, how do you not get pressured into buying some thing,Here are some top tips.
- Completeley ignore them
- Don't make eye contact
- A polite No actually incorages them
- Never ask the price of the object unless you are interested in buying it
And thats the thing ive noticed in my first 552 hours in Bali

Spa day
In my first 480 hours in Bali I have noticed he weird spa treatments here.
When we where in Ubud, Rafi went in a fish spa. Its sort of like a fish tank that you put your feet into, the fish are supposed to eat your dead skin off so that your feet are smooth. There's another treatment called the "Ear candle'" where they put wax from a candle into your ear and the ear wax in your ear is supposed to drip out.
And thats the thing I have noticed in my first 480 hours in Bali.

Monkeys
Here are some monkeys we saw yesterday in Ubud Bali. If you're holding fruit the monkeys will jump on you and sometimes they will pull your hair. Their favorite fruit is bananas and they can smell them even if you hide them in your bag.
Statues
in my first 456 hours in bali I have noticed the amout of statues and shrines around bali.
You usually see them in old "puras" and in the forests. We saw these ones in the monkey forest in Ubud. ( thats the reason I havent been posting anything in a while) There are also some in shrines but those ones are ones of gods.
And thats one of the things that i noticed in my first 24 hours in ubud and my 456 hours in bali.

Beaches of bali
In my first 312 hours in Bali I have noticed that all of the beaches are on the same bay.
The island is a HUGE volcano. When the volcano came out of the ocean and erupted, rocks came out of the volcano - big and small - over the years the small ones turned into sand while the bigger ones didn't. Most of the small rocks spat at the southern part of the island. Depending on where you are on the bay it has different names... For example if you are in Seminyak the bay is called "legian" and if you're in changgu then its called "Batu bolong beach"
And that's what i've learned in my first 312 hours in Bali.

The land of a thousand puras
In my first 184 hours in bali i have noticed the amount of temples or "pura" that are here. The pura are build on top of "hotspots" the biggest having the biggest temples and the smallest hotspots having the smallest temples. the temples are made out of little shrines that have fibrous roofs and in the verry midle of the templethere is a gaeblo thing that people go under to pray. Because there are so many themples in Bali it has earned the nickname "The land of a thousand temples.
And thats the thing that ive learned in my first 184 hours in Bali.

Waterbom
Three days ago Mum, Dad, Kahlil and I went to Waterbom. The craziest water park you'll EVER!!! go to. There are water slides as tall as skyscrapers; the scariest one I went on was the Boomerang - you go through a tunnel and then you go up a vertical slide and then you go backwards into a big pool where you get out. WE HAD THE FUNNEST DAY EVER!!!!!!!!

$
The thing that i've noticed in my 240 hours in bali is how cheap everyting is. For exsample you can buy a plate of scrambeld tofu. Yep, scrambled tofu for 100,000RP. You can get a taxi - or taksi from changgu (where we live) to seminyak for 30,000 and you can get laundry done for 20,000. They all seem like alot but he way to find out how many NZD it is you just take away four zero's.
So thats the thing that i've learned in my first 240 hours in Bali

Rubbish trouble
In my first 480 hours in bali i have noticed that there are no recycling bins ANYWHERE. Not at the amusment parks, not at the malls, not in the houses. Everything just ends up at the dump, and they have alot of dumps. Even in the big tourist areas like Kuta there are dumps everywhere. But the worst thing about it is the smell, you cant escape it wherever you go. And it is constantly hot, and if yo've ever smelled hot rubbish before, well lets just say you're lucky if you havent.
And thats that what i've noticed in my first 480 hours in bali.

P.S.
(I have'nt written a blog post for a day so mum and dad said i had to do two so my second article is going to be about...) Security, The security here is EXTEREMLY tight. Like if you dont say that you have a piece of fruit in your luggage when you come into Bali you can get put in jail...For five years! and at the really fancy hotels, every time you go there the security people check you for bombs!
And thats the second thing i've learned in my first 240 hours in Bali.

Balinese flag
Yesterday i saw a picture of the balinese flag. I thought that i saw the same colours somewhere else so i looked it up and it said that bali was once a duch colony. So i looked it up and i saw that the duch flag in the 1600's had the same colours as the balinese flag. So, that's what i've noticed in my first 120 hours in Bali.

Salemat Pagi -this is how you say good morning in Indonesian. This is me at a restaurant by the sea called Old Man's by Rafi
100 kites
In my first 96 hours here in bali i have noticed the amount of kites in the sky i have counted about 30 but i have'nt even been outside of Changgu yet so I'd say there would be over 100 kites over Bali. Its quite a famous celebration and it is to thank the gods for the good harvest. Its a compition too, groups representing their village fly kites that are either fish, bird, or leaf shaped kites but there are some that are 3D and shaped like Hindu gods. the best looking kite wins a trophy and is crowned the "best kite" for the year. Offering boxes
One of the First Things i noticed that when i got here was the offering boxes. they are at literally at the foot of every door of every building in all of Bali. it usually consists of flowers, insence , cucuber, raw rice, ash, and anything else imaginable. Also, it varys between what outside its door. for example fashion cloth shops have surouning it and resteraunts have cooked rice. they are supposed to be offerings to the gods and most people have shrines surronding it, some pepole have shrines that are sooo big that it takes up half of their backyard! And that is the thing that ive noticed in my first 72 hours in Bali By kahlil
